The Man Who Knew EVERYTHING

Fake graduate indicted on immigration charge

Pharoah BERKELEY - Shehrezad Faruk Czar seemed to have plenty of accomplishments under his belt when he applied for an immigrant visa at the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan in 2001.

Czar wrote that he held an honorary doctoral degree, had been nominated for the Nobel Prize in economics, and had just been named ambassador emeritus as well as professor emeritus of economics.

The institution that had bestowed upon him so many honors, according to Czar? The University of Berkley.

That's where he flunked out.

First, it's the University of California at Berkeley, not "Berkley." Second, the university doesn't confer such honors, no matter how officious -- or long-winded -- one may be: one entry said Czar was nominated for the Nobel Prize in recognition of his "outstanding research in applied economics, quantum physics and mathematical sciences."

Czar's entry about his ambassadorships noted that not only was he an ambassador emeritus, but an ambassador at-large, in recognition of his "achievements in physics, mathematics and economics."

Last week, a federal grand jury in Oakland awarded Czar, 38, something else: an indictment accusing him of "making a false swearing in an immigration matter."

The indictment, unsealed this week, almost read like a diploma.

"On or about May 3, 2001, at the United States Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan, the defendant Shehrezad Faruk Czar did knowingly make under oath, false statements with respect to a material fact in an application required by the immigration laws, specifically in an Application for Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration," the indictment said.

Czar was arrested on a no-bail warrant and appeared Monday in U.S. District Court in Oakland, where he pleaded not guilty. He will return to court Thursday for a detention hearing before U.S. Magistrate Wayne Brazil -- who happens to be a genuine alum of Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law.

If convicted, Czar could face deportation from the United States.   Link
