Kidnap, Kids & Kin ... the plot thickens
Above is an article from The Decatur Herald dated July 13, 1931. You see pictured my uncle, father and grandfather. This was the second kidnapping involving them - it was very big news back then - made all the papers in the country. I am named after either my grandfather or uncle and my father died before he could explain that. He always said he'd leave the answer in his will, but he must have forgotten. The only mention of me in that will was 'to be considered as previously deceased' - we were not close. I have decided to find the answer before I'm ancient history myself.

UPDATE: I was correct. Someone named 'Mary Swain' sent something to me last week. It is from a Texas vital statistics ledger circa 1949. I had never heard that my grandfather had a daughter at almost exactly the same time I was 'born'. He would have been 64 and his third wife nearly 36. Rather late in life to be having babies. I have never heard of a Carol Ann Turman. Curious. Anyone out there with any more ideas or information? Seems someone wants to help.

My father filled out my birth certificate ... he had a rather ...dark... sense of humor ...

What IS your name?
Posted by: Mary | 10/25/2009 at 05:05 PM
My full name is Luther Steel Turman.
I'm the 'oldest' yet my younger brother was named after my father - the 'junior'.
Never have figured that out and I sure as hell don't know why I was named 'Steel'.
But I aim to find out.
Someone knows.

Interesting. What's your Birthdate Steel?

To the best of my knowledge, 5/5/49.
I am no longer certain of that.
I feel older :)

Steel, please check your messages! If that file doesn't come through, write me back. This is so odd and I don't know what to make of it. Mary

It came through but I don't know how to open it.
I'm working on it.

Interesting. Your birth was witnessed by a person named 'Blewit'. I know there are some Turmans around my neck of the woods. Were you born in Texas?

Yeah, as in 'he blew it' :)
Turmans are thick in Indiana.
My branch comes from that branch but very very long ago.
I was. Born in Austin - or so the records show.
The incidence of my 'birth' seems to be a bit more ... complex than merely being born.
Working on that.
