Do you trust this woman to protect you?
WASHINGTON -The Bush administration presented intelligence to U.S. lawmakers on Thursday that it believes shows North Korea helped Syria to build a suspected nuclear facility destroyed by Israel last year.
The closed-door briefings conducted by CIA Director Michael Hayden and other intelligence officials breaks U.S. official silence on the matter and could complicate American diplomacy with North Korea and in the Middle East.
While some lawmakers last year got classified information about the September 6 Israeli air strike, they voiced bitterness that the administration had only shared the intelligence more widely nearly eight months after the incident.
A U.S. official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to discuss classified matters, said that among the intelligence the United States has was an image of what appeared to be people of Korean descent at the facility. Link
As usual, there's more to this story than meets the eye. For instance, a brief survey of the newswires reveals that, without exception, this story is being reported with lots of caveats - 'alledged', 'suspected', 'appear to show' are used liberally by a media biased against reality. CNN even went so far as to place this story on its 'Politics' page. Politics? When did national security become a 'political' issue? Ah, that's an easy one - it started the day Democrats saw the war in Iraq as a method to regain power and a majority in Congress. This poses a very clear and present danger to our security and yet - lawmakers are miffed that they weren't kept informed to their own expectations. Doesn't that strike you as an odd complaint? Do you doubt that Nancy Pelosi would not have made Assad aware of our knowledge in the hopes of being 'successful' in her 'diplomatic' visit to Damascus? Do you doubt Jimmy Carter would not divulge it? Of course not and that is precisely why members of Congress - ESPECIALLY Democrats - cannot be trusted with sensitive information. It is a guaranteed certainty they will use it to leverage their own petty political pursuits without regard to our safety or security.
And then there's North Korea. Christopher Hill has been 'negotiating' with the Hermit Kingdom for over a year, occasionally issuing overly positive statements all saying that 'progress' is being made. Bullshit. It is impossible to 'negotiate' with a mugger. You either capitulate or go on the offensive. The political will to act unilaterally is not there and we are relying on China to do our heavy lifting with Kim Jong-Il. China has little interest in applying pressure, fearing a collapse of the little psycho's regime and the subsequent refugee exodus across their border with North Korea and anything which causes the United States to focus its attention anywhere but Beijing is desirable. Meanwhile, Kim has been busy churning out fissile material, testing nuclear weapons and long range missiles as well as aiding another rogue state with their own nefarious nuclear weapons program. All of this ongoing under the noses of Nancy Pelosi & Co.
Anyone who might be considering voting for either Democratic presidential candidate should try and visualize a foreign policy led by the mindset that puts national security in the political arena - that is suicide and inevitable if both the legislative and administrative branches are in Democrat's control. Just remember what Nancy Pelosi said and when and where she said it. It was in Damascus while the North Koreans were there, busy helping Syria build a nuclear weapons plant. Do you really believe she and her compatriots are capable of defending this country? They cannot be trusted with even the least sensitive information - much less this nation's future. Think twice before you pull that lever. Think real hard about it.
One more thing - China. If we really want China to put the screws to North Korea, there are several very powerful incentives we hold. Trade, their equity holdings in the U.S. and the Olympics. Since the economy is soft anyway, I see no reason why we shoudn't bite the bullet and drastically reduce trade. Furthermore, if China is unwilling to act responsibly - they should be summarily booted out of the WTO. Moreover, I can see no good reason not to freeze all of their assets immediately. Nationalize them. Lastly, to hell with the Olympics. It was only on their promise of becoming more open and democratic and their assurances they'd rein in Kim that the Olympics were granted to them. They have reneged in all respects and we have no business lending them any legitimacy by participating. Were we to pull out, so would France, Britain, Germany, Italy and several East European nations, rendering the Games a farce - the farce they truly are. The world is paying lip service to freedom by allowing the Olympics to go on without meaningful protest.

We're gonna get into it with China sooner or later unless they get hinky with the Russians first over Siberia. I'm of the opinion that we got lucky in that the collapse of the USSR was relatively peaceful. I don't think the ChiComs are going to go quietly.

Yup.
Their military is paid poor. It's big, but their hearts aren't in it - witness the slow response to the riots in the southern provinces over Tibet. Took 'em three days to decide whether to act or not.
A single phone call would collapse China. WalMart could stop buying and the country would implode in a matter of weeks.
Yeah, they'll reach out and fuck with people, Taiwan, Japan and maybe even Russo-Siberia.
But they will be pissing in the wind. Their people will be hungry and cold (witness what has happened in the last few weeks with some bad weather) and those people (all 1.8 billion of them) will be very unlikely to allow the current structure to remain.
What will take its place is hard to see. I think at that point, we, the West, would have an opportunity to engage the population on a basis of true equality. Our trade will set them free.
I think they are ready.
I hope we are.

Ditto on the Olympics!
What is the ratio of military to civilians in CHINA?
A revolution perhaps.....

Well, let's just hope we have some adults in charge in Washington when China goes down the tubes.
