Oh, Give me a home where the buffalo roam ...
NEW YORK – Bison can repopulate large areas from Alaska to Mexico over the next 100 years provided a series of conservation and restoration measures are taken, according to continental assessment of this iconic species by the Wildlife Conservation Society and other groups. The assessment was authored by a diverse group of conservationists, scientists, ranchers, and Native Americans/First Nations peoples, and appears in the April issue of the journal Conservation Biology.
The authors say that ecological restoration of bison, a keystone species in American natural history, could occur where conservationists and others see potential for large, unfettered landscapes over the next century. The general sites identified in the paper range from grasslands and prairies in the southwestern U.S., to Arctic lowland taiga in Alaska where the sub-species wood bison could once again roam. Large swaths of mountain forests and grasslands are identified as prime locations across Canada and the U.S., while parts of the desert in Mexico could also again support herds that once lived there. STAMPEDE!
NEW YORK CITY ??? First of all, buffalo would destroy fencing and free range cattle herds would be in direct competition and unless we want to be paying $50.00 @ lb for beef raised in pens like Kobe beef, we need cattle on that land and not buffalo. Secondly, buffalo carry *brucellosis, a disease which affects both animals as well as deer, elk, moose, dogs, sheep, pigs and HUMANS. It can be mitigated in domestic livestock and by predation in animals that herd in much smaller numbers. But it is impossible to innoculate wild buffalo - witness the fact that the small herd in Yellowstone cannot even be treated and whenever some of them escape - by pulling down neighboring ranchers barbed wire fence - they are summarily shot. And with good reason, brucellosis can wipe out whole herds of livestock. What an absurd notion, unless of course, it is your ultimate goal to restore this country back to the way it was before Columbus landed ...

Too late!
I just finished off some great red sauce, using ground buffalo meat!

I love buffalo burgers, and devoured 2 of them last week (not on the same night). They're not at all gristly or greasy, just plain tasty. I thought they were all from New York:)

Welp, if these people intended to raise and graze buffalo for food, I'd be all for it.
Beats beef hands down.
But something tells me that Buffalo Big Macs are not on their menu.
