JOHANNESBURG - The United Nations' top AIDS scientists plan to acknowledge this week that they have long overestimated both the size and the course of the epidemic, which they now believe has been slowing for nearly a decade, according to U.N. documents prepared for the announcement.

AIDS remains a devastating public health crisis in the most heavily affected areas of sub-Saharan Africa. But the far-reaching revisions amount to at least a partial acknowledgment of criticisms long leveled by outside researchers who disputed the U.N. portrayal of an ever-expanding global epidemic.

The latest estimates, due to be released publicly Tuesday, put the number of annual new HIV infections at 2.5 million, a cut of more than 40 percent from last year's estimate, documents show. The worldwide total of people infected with HIV -- estimated a year ago at nearly 40 million and rising - now will be reported as 33 million.

Having millions fewer people with a lethal contagious disease is good news. Some researchers, however, contend that persistent overestimates in the widely quoted U.N. reports have long skewed funding decisions and obscured potential lessons about how to slow the spread of HIV. Critics have also said that U.N. officials overstated the extent of the epidemic to help gather political and financial support for combating AIDS.

"There was a tendency toward alarmism, and that fit perhaps a certain fundraising agenda," said Helen Epstein, author of "The Invisible Cure: Africa, the West, and the Fight Against AIDS." "I hope these new numbers will help refocus the response in a more pragmatic way."

Annemarie Hou, spokeswoman for the U.N. AIDS agency, speaking from Geneva, declined to comment on the grounds that the report had not been released publicly. Link

Let's see now. In the last 40 some years, over 150 billion dollars in economic aid to Africa is unaccounted for and presumed pocketed by despots, tyrants and UN officials. UN Peace Keepers have routinely raped women AND children, pillaged and plundered in every theater of operations they've ever been deployed to since the organization was first chartered, all the while being 100% ineffectual in keeping any semblance of peace or order anywhere at anytime. The Oil for Food program has been shown with absolute certainty to be perhaps the largest single case of fraud in the history of mankind. The UN committee charged with remodeling the UN building in New York City has accepted a bid in excess of 2 billion dollars - while the biggest real estate developer in NYC has offerred to do the job for less than 200 million dollars - of course, the UN turned him down. Ahh, the list goes on and on and on ... there's simply no end to the fraud, theft, larceny, graft, corruption, collusion, deception, misappropriation, misrepresentation, misdirection and miscellaneous felonious behavior to be found at the United Nations. There is a no more worthess waste of space, time, effort or money to be found in this Universe or any other. If a black hole could coexist with matter as we know it, it would be found on Turtle Bay in Manhattan. And now this. They fudged the numbers by at least 40% (that's all they're owning up to because that's all that can be proved) and this was done because 'it fit a certain fundraising agenda'. JAYSUS! Now there's a grand euphemism for grand theft on a global scale if I ever heard one. And speaking of global. This is the self same august body which just the other day, claimed the Earth is doomed due to global warming UNLESS the wealthy nations act NOW! I've said it before and I'll say it again. If there IS a God, HE will destroy that Shrine of Satan, that Edifice of Evil, the Tower of Babel and make damned sure everybody's home when HE does.

Spread the word!

"I hope these new numbers will help refocus the response in a more pragmatic way."

The pragmatic thing to do would be to kick the UN off U.S. soil, and reduce our monetary "contribution".
