Freedom

Kris Kristofferson penned a little ditty awhile back. Janis gave it voice.

Since then, there have been many covers of that tune. 'Me & Bobby McGee'. Did you know that Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar? Yup. Him and Bill Clinton were almost classmates in England.

At Oxford. Both from the South. Both rebels. Both gifted. One could spin a tale. One could spin.

There's a very telling lyric in that song. 'Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose'.

The freedom that KK was speaking of ... he didn't know about then. Then, freedom was 'life unfettered'. On the Road ... again. He was young. War was Hell. Don't trust anybody over 30.

Heh. Seems like we have aged since then. The world has gotten smaller and more personal. Not just a hitch hike across. The only thumb you really need is the one you use to hit the 'space bar' with on your keyboard. In any language. In any country. At any time.

I think were he to write that song today he might rephrase it a bit.

'Freedom's just another thing you NEVER want to lose'.

... happy 4th of July folks. Ya got nothin' people if you ain't free.

"You only have power over people as long as you don't take everything away from them. But when you've robbed a man of everything he's no longer in your power - he's free again."
